Betty Grace Mattes, age 93, passed away April 4, 2020 in Hondo, Texas. She was born on December 10, 1926 in Wortham, Texas to C.B. Mays and Florence Selby Mays. She worked for the Order of the Daedalians at Kelly AFB. She was an avid animal lover, in younger years she and her husband were very active in the dog show world where they judged dog shows and was a lifetime member of the American Kennel Club. She and her husband would go on month long hunting trips when they were younger and they were American Sportsmen. They lived on the Carson Ranch where they would check hunters in and out, check horns, and got to live on site. She loved to go bowling and traveling in their motor home.
As she got older, she enjoyed playing bridge and watch the wildlife outside of her bedroom window. She always got a kick out of the newborn deer and goats. She also enjoyed reading, her favorite being murder mystery novels. She also loved having her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren visiting her. She enjoyed crocheting where she made blankets and stuffed animals. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Earl Mattes and her son, James E. Mattes. She is survived by her daughter, Gene Draker and her husband Richard; grandchildren, Gena Draker Chernak and husband Andrew, Brent Selby Draker and wife Anna, Julie Anne Lally and husband Jim, Leticia Diane Kosub and husband Brady, Nancy Seidensticker and husband Greg; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
