December 5, 2021, surrounded by family. He was born February 24, 1936, in San Antonio, son
of the late José and Consuelo Ramón.
Ben was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Santacruz Ramón, brothers Elias Ramón and
Joe Ramón, and sisters Minerva Muraida and Olga Schmidt.
Ben was a member of El Sendero Church and cherished attending service there. He devoted his
life to following Christ and raised his children in the faith.
Ben is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth S. Ramón; children, Omar Casanova (Lupe), Alan
Casanova (Raquel), Oneyda Casanova (Lizzeta), Mark Ramón (Mariah), Michael Ramón
(Tracy), Elizabeth Tilson (Timm), Martha Goodlow (Andre); grandchildren, Serena, Judit,
Gabriel, Lizzet, Edward, Sofia, Ashlyn, Isaac, Paloma, Ava, Isabella, Gabriela; great
grandchildren: Kai, Kivh; sister, Elida Epperson; brother, Arthur Ramón, and many other family
members whom he loved dearly.
Ben loved world history and travel and visited Europe and North Africa as a young man. He
shared this love with his children and particularly loved recounting his travels through
slideshows and stories. He was especially proud of his experience running with the bulls in
Pamplona, Spain.
Ben led his family with love and integrity, and he greatly cherished and nurtured his relationship
with each of his children. And while he faced hardship at times, he always protected his family
and ensured that they always felt loved and supported.
A lifelong educator, Ben stressed the importance of education to his children. His stability,
encouragement, and support throughout the ups and downs of life provided the foundation on
which they each could build successful careers and relationships. Ben also greatly impacted the
lives of countless students throughout his teaching career. He was loved and well-respected by
colleagues and students alike, from his first job at Bishop Forest High School in Schulenberg,
Texas and teaching in California early in his career, to finding a home at Connell Middle School
in San Antonio, Texas, from where he retired. Former students would often approach him to say
hello and share fond memories. His love of teaching also included a fascination with grammar
and spelling. In silly and serious conversations alike, he enjoyed correcting grammar and
reciting rules, passing on this “hobby” to his children.
In addition to the classroom, Ben taught on the road as a driving instructor for Rhodes Driving
School. His quick wit and great sense of humor always made his lessons memorable. Ben will
be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
