I met Barbara when my son was a student at the Winston School in San Antonio.  I got to know her even better when I worked at the school as a school nurse.  It was during this time that I came to love her as my friend.  Barbara was a wonderful, caring person. She was intelligent and had a deep understanding of the students as well as people in general.  I always enjoyed stopping by her office for a chat in the afternoons.  She has done so much for so many students in her lifetime.  If that were all, it would be enough, but Barbara made the world a better place in everything she did. She was a wonderful friend.  She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.  I love you, Friend. 

I worked with Barbara and her team for decades to help the state of Texas move forward in serving individuals with disabilities, particularly Texans with complex mental health issues. Her leadership in achieving our goals extended beyond  school districts to legislative initiatives which contributed to statewide improvements that ultimately set the bar for broader changes across the field of psychology.  As a fearless trail-blazer, Barbara's effort and focus serve as a beacon for the rest of us. 


I first met Barbara in the early ‘90’s, when I was employed in Edgewood ISD.  Barbara had learned of some proposed changes to the practice of School Psychology in Tx.  Her reaction:  “We need a voice!  We need to organize!”  She was instrumental in forming a local professional organization, and soon had us making trips to Austin to meet our legislators.  She made sure we had input during the state legislative “sausage-making” process of determining the LSSP credential.  Barbara spearheaded a letter writing campaign to Gov. Bush’s Director of Appointments.  We wrote in support of naming our boss to the Tx. State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, to help ensure representation of the field of School Psychology.  Barbara organized conventions for psychologists to earn Continuing Ed. Units.  She “recruited” a few of us to leave our previous districts and apply at Northside ISD.  “Fearless leader” comes to mind.  Beyond her take charge, can-do attitude, Barbara was always up for a good talk and a good laugh!  

Barbara and I were officemates when I started working at North side.  We had a lot of laughs but my favorite day was giving her a voodoo doll of a shared dreaded person. I thought she would fall off her chair---we laughed even harder when she used the darn thing and the person strolled by our office complaining of a headache!   I was a rookie and she a veteran to the job but the odd couple somehow worked.  Many happy memories!
