2024, following a battle with cancer. She was born December 28, 1948, to Ian W and Anna M
MacAlister in Wiesbaden, Germany, where her parents had been stationed during and following
WWII.
As the child of a serviceman, Barbara lived in Germany, Washington DC, Hawaii, Alaska, North
Carolina and finally in San Antonio, Texas, where she spent the remainder of her life. She
considered herself an adopted Texan.
Barbara graduated from Alamo Heights High School in1967, then earned her bachelor’s degree
in education at Texas A&I University, Kingsville, later earning her Master’s degree in School
Administration.
She was a dedicated teacher in the San Antonio ISD, spending the majority of
her career teaching first through fifth grades at Lorenzo De Zavala Elementary School. After her
retirement in 2001, she worked toward a certificate in American Sign Language at San Antonio
College.
Barbara performed with Fire On the Mountain Cloggers for many years. She loved to dance
and perform with the group, and only stopped when her knees gave out. She was an avid and
intrepid traveler, having driven her Mazda Miata to many destinations across the US, including
the Pacific Northwest, New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and Alaska. She especially loved
spending time in Port Aransas and on the Gulf Coast of Texas. She delighted in all animals, and
spoiled her many dogs over her lifetime. She was a devout Christian, a member of Town East
Baptist Church.
Barbara is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ian W and Ruth A MacAlister, two nieces, a
grand-niece and a grand-nephew.
Family will receive friends Thursday, March 28 at 1:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral
Home, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio. Services will begin at 2:00 pm, and interment will follow,
for immediate family only, in the cemetery near the place where her parents were laid to rest. In
lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Town East Baptist Church, or the
American Cancer Society
