Sophia Sanchez. He was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Isabel Sanchez; as
well as his sisters Josie Zamora, Isabel Aradillas and Hortencia Sanchez; and his brother
Jose Sanchez, Jr.
Augustine, or Augie as he was most commonly known, was born on May 18, 1949. He
was a proud Texan -- born and raised in San Antonio. As a young man, he valiantly
served his country for two years in Vietnam and was awarded two purple hearts.
Upon returning from Vietnam, Augie met and courted his wife-to-be. He could be seen
driving around town in his brand new green Camaro. One day, he noticed Esther waiting
for the bus. He pulled over and asked if she wanted a ride. She said, ‘No, thank you.’ He
repeatedly asked her if she wanted a ride, and she repeatedly declined his offer.
Determined to impress her, he followed the bus to her destination. Finally she said yes.
They married on December 23, 1972, and recently celebrated their 39th wedding
anniversary.
Augie accessed the GI Bill and was one of the first in his family to graduate from college
with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He graduated from Our Lady of the Lake
University. Politics was his passion and he pursued that passion through his involvement
with the union while working at the post office. Last year, he retired from the post office
after working there for 35 years. Augie was committed to his family, God and his
community. He was an active parishioner at Prince of Peace church and served as a
Eucharistic Minister. He blessed homes and taught religious education classes at the
church. Augie and Esther were also heavily involved in planning the church’s annual Fall
Festival. Augie was a member of the Knights of Columbus and reached the rank of Sir
Knight. In addition to helping the church, he could also be found cheering for his beloved
San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys on any given Sunday.
Augie will most be remembered for his generosity and resilience. He was a supportive
father who could be seen cheering at Stacie’s softball games and Steve’s baseball
practices. He continued to be a hands-on parent and grandfather throughout his days.
Augie was a true friend, gentleman, wonderful father, grandfather and son. We mourn
the loss of an admirable man and will miss him dearly.
