Augustina Tovar Contreras, “Ama,” was born on October 13, 1928 in Waxahachie, Texas, to Andres and Juanita Tovar. She lived a remarkable life of 94 years, having lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and many other historical events.
In 1946, she married the love of her life, Guadalupe Contreras, and they had 14 children: Irene, Guadalupe Jr., Mary Helen, Johnny, Andres, Sandra, Ignacio, Alice, Gloria, Robert, Rosemarie, Janie, Edward, and Susana.
She and her family traveled throughout the US as migrant farm workers, eventually making homes between Michigan and Texas. Augustina also worked for some years at Ramada Nursing Home. She dedicated her later life to caring full-time for her beloved husband, children, and grandchildren.
In 1996, Guadalupe and Augustina celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary accompanied by their loved ones in their longtime home on San Ignacio Avenue.
Augustina was a resilient woman of God who loved keeping up with politics and current events. She bravely survived Covid-19 during the pandemic. Until her last days, Augustina loved to water her plants, joke around, tell stories, read, and spend time outside on her porch with her children and grandchildren. Many relatives remember her singing, “Read your bible, pray every day.”
Augustina is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Guadalupe, and her children Irene, Guadalupe Jr., Susana, and Sandra.
She is survived by her siblings Anita, Yolanda, Gilbert, and Juan Tovar; her children Mary Helen, Johnny, Andres, Ignacio, Alicia, Gloria, Robert, Rosemarie, Janie, and Edward; her 55 grandchildren, 169 great-grandchildren, and 87 great-great-grandchildren.
Ama will be dearly missed by all her family.
