Antonio “Tony” Martinez entered into the loving arms of Our Lord on April 24, 2023, at the age of 81. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on February 23, 1942, to Dominga Romero and Fortunato Martinez. He was the second of eight children.
Tony met Olga Camacho at the age of 17 while attending a cousin’s Christmas Party. The relationship grew and the couple got married in 1967 after a seven year courtship. He entered the United States Army at the tender age of 25. He served until February of 1969 where he was able to come back to family in San Antonio. The couple was able to move to Fort Lewis, Washington St. during Tony’s service, where they met three other couples. A friendship grew between the couples, and they stayed in touch throughout the years.
Tony had several hobbies such as woodworking, gardening, reading western novels, camping, fishing and traveling. He created beautiful everyday items out of wood. He would see the beauty in simple patterns and constructions while adding his own personal touch. He had a green thumb that could grow any fruit tree, or vegetable. The family home had several fruit trees from fig trees, peach trees, and several seasonal vegetables. He was a big history and geography buff and loved to travel out to State and National Parks. He loved to be outdoors. Tony was also a great cook, especially if he had to use a grill. His favorite sport teams would be the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs, never missing a game on TV.
Most of all Tony loved his family. He would typically work two or three jobs in order to make sure to give the best to his children. Even with multiple careers, he always attended the children games. When the grandchildren came into the picture, his heart grew more. He loved to spend time with them. During the weekend, he would get the grandchildren together in the kitchen and they would together cook pancakes, french toast, or eggs, whatever the grandchildren wanted. Tony was a big kid at heart. Children naturally opened up to him and knew he would be trust worthy.
Tony will be reunited in heaven with his parents, Dominga and Fortunato Martinez; sister, Ester M. Ruiz and Rosa M. Garcia; and brothers, Baby Fortunato Martinez Jr., Alfredo Martinez, Jose Martinez.
His memory will forever be remembered by his wife, Olga Martinez; children, Michael A. Martinez, Cristobal Martinez (Katharine) and Belinda Y. Martinez (Sidney). Grandchildren, Amanda Perez (Daniel) and Jessica Martinez (Javier); great-grandchildren, Aviana, Amelia, and Luca Antonio. Sister, Virginia Martinez; brother, Abel Martinez (Yolanda) and Aunt Rosa R. O’ Campo. Special family friends, Joan Cox, Frank and Joan Sparks, Roy and Joyce Dessner, Albert Cox and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Special thanks to many friends and family who prayed for Tony and the caring staff at San Antonio
Residence and Rehabilitation Center.
