Al was born in Pittsburg, Kansas to Alice and Jack Ritter on November 24, 1945. His father was in the US Air Force and his family moved to different military bases while he was growing up. His father retired in Phoenix, Arizona where Al graduated from high school. He attended Arizona State University and graduated in 1968 with a BS in electrical engineering. After graduation, he was commissioned in the US Air Force through the ROTC program. His first assignment was at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, TX where he met his future wife, Sandee Scherberth from St. Paul, MN. Al and Sandee were married in November of 1968 and were married for 55 years.
Al spent his career as an intelligence officer in the US Air Force, and he and Sandee lived in a variety of interesting places including a total of eight years in Germany. While stationed in Los Angeles, CA their daughter Shelley was born in 1979, and during an assignment in Albuquerque, NM their son Kyle was born in 1983. In 1998, after returning to San Antonio for his final tour, Al retired after thirty years of service attaining the rank of Colonel.
Al had a wonderful sense of humor, loved his family and enjoyed all sports, sharing his enthusiasm with his children and grandchildren. Al was a talented tennis player and played throughout his life. He played at Arizona State and continued to compete while serving in the Air Force. He enjoyed playing with friends and neighbors and even competed in the Senior Games.
He is survived by his wife, Sandee, daughter, Shelley Beck, her husband, Ryan, and their daughter Charlotte and by his son Kyle Ritter and his wife Allison, daughter Hailey, and sons Alexander and Max. He is survived by his brothers, JB Ritter and Bill Ritter, and sister Arlene Ross and their spouses and children as well as his cousin Beverly Post.
A funeral service will be held at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas on January 26, 2024 at 2:30 pm with a reception following at Sunset Memorial.
