Alberta Ann Escobedo was born September 10, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas and entered into eternal rest on August 28, 2022. She is preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Peter Leos, and her husband of 65 years, Fernando Zaragoza Escobedo. Alberta was an only child who graduated from Little Flower Catholic School and later attended business school. She began her career in 1957 at Kelly Air Force Base in the personnel office. At Kelly, Alberta met what she described as ‘a cute Electronics Specialist’, and they began a whirlwind courtship. They married on May 18, 1957 and had two children.
Sunday mornings was family breakfast day at the Escobedo house. These breakfasts included every breakfast food you can imagine; why choose? The family spent time with aunts, uncles and cousins, taking the boat out to Medina Lake, going fishing in Corpus and visiting theme parks. Alberta especially loved to fish. She didn’t even have to catch anything, as long as the line was wet; she was happy.
After 31 years of loyal civil service, Alberta retired in 1988. It was just in time for Alberta to take on the role of grandma. Her first grandchild was born in 1994 and renamed her ‘Mamo’ and her second grandchild was born in 1999.
Alberta was the person who got it all done; at work; at home, for her friends attending every party and shower, and for her grandkids attending every recital, concert, play and awards assembly. In addition to sharing her time, Alberta would share her talent. Over the years, Mamo gifted her beautiful crochet blankets, doilies, embroidered bibs and drawings to friends and family. Once Mamo knew a baby was on the way, the baby would soon be swaddled in her beautiful handiwork. She also never missed a chance to make a call, or send a card for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and showers.
Her giving spirit, her boisterous belly laughs and her ability to just sit and talk-up a storm is indelibly imprinted in the hearts of her children, Barbara Ann Escobedo, Jeffrey Kirk Escobedo and his wife Joyce and their children Austin Connor and Jacquelyn Kay, her many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, life-long friends and the strangers she inevitably befriended.
Visitation for Alberta will be at 6 PM at Sunset Funeral Home 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio TX on Wednesday September 14, 2022 with a rosary to follow at 7 PM, and a Memorial Tribute at 8 PM. On Thursday September 15, 2022 at 9:30 AM, the funeral mass will be held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower at 1715 N. Zarzamora San Antonio, TX. A procession will follow, where she will be laid to rest at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11 AM. Family and friends are invited to attend her Celebration of Life Reception from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the Sunset Funeral Home.
