Having believed the truth of the gospel and accepted by faith, Jesus as Savior and Lord; A.R. “Butch” Armstrong slipped softly and tenderly into arms of Jesus at 8:23 am, Sunday, March 11, 2012. In accordance with his wishes Butch was interred before sundown that same day at Sunset Memorial.
Butch came into this life Friday, September 13, 1935 in Gainesville, Texas. He graduated from Gainesville High School and attended Texas State University in Arlington, where he met and fell in love with his bride of 55 years.
Butch was an entrepreneur and inventor he had numerous professions including working for the Santa Fe Railroad as a fireman and engineer, salesman for Montgomery Wards & International Homes Sales, Inc. He began working as a subcontractor in 1972 for Alice Roofing & Sheet Metal Works, Inc. and in 1982 acquired the business.
Before retiring in 1999, Butch was passionate about the roofing industry, the safety of his employees, the quality of the work performed and the improvement of the industry. This passion was demonstrated through his service as President of the Roofing Contractor’s Association of Texas, aiding in establishing RCAT’s Roofing Certification Program, obtaining Certificate No. 1 of that program as a Certified Commercial and Residential Roofing Contractor, serving on the Board of Directors of the National Roofing Contractors Association and giving testimony before the Texas State Legislature regarding worker’s compensation reform for the industry.
After retirement Butch took great pleasure in enhancing his understanding of the Holy Scriptures and growing in his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ by attending Bible Study Fellowship and daily prayer and Bible study with his wife. Some of his favorite scriptures include: Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 5:8; John 10:10 and Isaiah 41:10.
Butch is preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie; father, William and brother, Bo.
He is survived by his wife Betty; sons Roger and Sidney and wife Vikki; grand daughters Delaney and Reagan; brothers Gene and Glenn; sisters & brothers in law Helen, Johnnie, Harry and Dick; cousin Janetta Young; nieces and nephews Vicki Christian, Craig and Steve Armstrong, Chris Wharton, Larry and Garry Stotts, Herbie Wagner, Marjorie Beth Taylor, Michael and Paul Stotts and many friends.
We would like to extend our deepest thanks to the staff at North East Methodist Hospital and Hospice Inspiris, especially Ms. Teresa Myers, who shines brightly the light of Christ.
