Susie was born to August and Minnie (Woolridge) Bauerlein on October 13, 1914. She married John L. Hyatt in 1933. Two children were born to this union, Johnnie Sue and J.L. Hyatt. She lost her beloved soldier husband, when he was killed by a sniper in 1943 in Germany during WW II. She supported her two children as a nurse, employed by both the Clinic Hospital and Shannon Hospital. In 1966 she married Emil Smetana and moved to the Grape Creek Community where she resided until after Emil’s death in 1982.
Susie lived independently until the age of 94, enjoying her yard, flowers, fruit and nut trees. Reading and playing Rummy Cubes were her favorite pass times. She spent her last 2 years in the loving care of her daughter, continuing, until her recent illness, her reading and cross word puzzles.
She was preceded in death by both husbands, both brothers, and a grandson.
Susie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Johnnie Sue and David Gist, her son, J.L. Hyatt as well as 3 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren, most of whom called her ” Grand Susie”. Additionally she is survived by her Smetana family, Ronnie and Rita Smetana and their children and grandchildren.
She touched the lives of many, always with love, understanding, and open arms and time to listen. Memories of her can be nothing but positive and our hearts are heavy at our loss. We are all so blessed to have known her.
