Samie Lee Calhoun Ewald was born on her grandparents Dickens farm near Eldorado, Texas on the eleventh day of April, 1926. She was the first of six children of Sam and Cecil Calhoun of Christoval, Texas. She passed away on September 29, 2010 in San Angelo, Texas at the age of 84.
Samie was raised on a farm outside of Christoval. After graduation from high school, she moved to San Angelo to attend and graduate from San Angelo Junior College. On February 24, 1951 she married the love of her life, West Texas cotton man Pete Ewald, Jr. and together they raised their family. In 1972 they purchased the Ewald family cotton buying business and formed P. P. Ewald & Sons, Inc. Samie’s great skill as a business woman has always been appreciated by her family as well as their customers. Their sons Paul and Brent continue to work this business that was formed in 1902.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Pete in 1988, her youngest son, Stuart Ewald in 1987, and a sister, JoAnn Kleypas.
Samie is survived by her daughter Sharon Strayhorn and husband David of Burkburnett, Texas, son Paul Ewald of San Angelo, and son Brent Ewald and wife Lesa of San Angelo. Samie was grandmother of eight, Audrey Strayhorn Carter, Lindsay Strayhorn Fournier, Lee Ewald, Taylor Ewald, Logan Ewald, Austin Ewald, Peter Ewald, and Mary Grace Ewald. She was also blessed by three great-grandchildren, Alexis Carter, Lauren Carter, and Colby Fournier. She is also survived by four brothers and their families, Bobby Calhoun of Phoenix, Arizona, Buddy Calhoun of Spicewood, Texas, Earl Calhoun of Bulverde, Texas, and Danny Calhoun of Orient, Texas. Also surviving are in-laws Oscar & Doris Lock and many nieces & nephews.
A special thanks to her caregivers Marta Wolfe, Barbara Stanford and Sandy Whitten----- who lovingly cared for her when her health began to fail.
Visitation will be Friday, October 1, 2010 at Johnson’s Funeral Home from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.Graveside services will be Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Dr. Mark Bumpus, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating.
Pallbearers will be her five grandsons.
