Ruth Evangeline Martinez met her Savior on December 18, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 10, 1939 to Reverend Santos A. and Mary (Cortez) Becerra in Carlsbad, New Mexico. As a Pastor’s daughter she grew up traveling to different churches and cities in New Mexico, Illinois, Michigan, Colorado and Texas. Although they lived simply, they were rich in spirit.
On September 17, 1961 she married Joseph J. Martinez. Their union brought forth two daughters Debbie and Diana. They lived in California for a number of years until their return to Texas. Ruth worked in banking for many years but her true calling was as a homemaker. Her house was always spotless and her beans were delicious. She was usually found at home with her loving husband doing crosswords or picture puzzles. She also spent many hours volunteering with the elderly at local nursing homes.
Ruth was a beacon of light which shown on all who encountered her. She spoke of her love of the Lord to all who would listen but she never preached. She could sing any hymn. She was a prayer warrior, praying constantly for others, especially her grandchildren. She would often be found praying over the phone with her sister-in-law Martha.
Ruth leaves behind her husband of 61 years Joseph J. Martinez; daughters Debbie (Tom) Donohue and Diana (Raymond) Torres; brother Reverend Santos (Martha) Becerra, Jr.; grandchildren Raymond (Debra) Torres, Erica (Michael) Robles, James (Alicia) Rios, Kimberly Rogers, Jacob (Josie) Torres, Christian Rios (fiancé Alex Ramirez), David Torres and Joseph Torres. She also left behind a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and treasured friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Shannon Four South (especially Manuela) for their care.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 22, 2022 at Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens officiated by Reverend Santos Becerra, Jr. Ruth requested those gathered wear bright colors as this is a celebration. Her grandson Joseph Torres will play the trumpet and her grandchildren will carry her to her final earthly resting place as a host of angel’s welcome her to her final reward.
Donations can be made to Meals for the Elderly in lieu of flowers.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
