Ron was born March 28, 1937, in Manhattan, NY to Harry and Julia Reiner.
After finishing High School, Ron joined the Navy and served on the USS Ponchatoula as Radarman 2nd Class from September of 1955 – December of 1958. Ron later joined the Army in May of 1959 and became part of the Army Security Agency. He quickly discovered that the Chinese language came very easily to him. His talent with the Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages, his calm, collected demeanor and intellect made him a natural translator and interrogator. He completed several tours of duty in Asia, the United States, and the Pacific as part of Army Intelligence including Vietnam. During his service received the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal, and the Bronze Star amongst others.
Ron married Mary Brigid O’Leary on the 19th of August in 1961. Theirs was a chance meeting in Washington D.C. Mary was working for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Ron was stationed in Washington at the time and walked a lady home from a dance. It just so happened she was Mary’s roommate. They fell in love, married, and had their three children, Dennis, Katherine, and Andrew.
After retiring from the military, Ron and Mary decided to settle in San Angelo. He and a friend opened their own electronics repair business, Triangle Electronics. In 1994, Ron and Mary along with their son Dennis bought The Scrub Pub and kept it until 2002. Many will remember Ron for being the unnamed, undefeated champion at Jeopardy while bartending there in the afternoons.
Ron was a proud member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. He was very active in Angelo Civic Theater for close to thirty years as well, whether it be performing in/working on numerous plays or simply attending the theater for most every production.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM January 8, 2022, at Emmanuel Episcopal church located at 3 S. Randolph in San Angelo, TX.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial donation to Meals for the Elderly, The American Cancer Society and/or a Veteran’s charity of your choosing.
The family would also like to thank San Angelo’s First Responders and Johnson’s Funeral Home for their promptness, understanding, caring and compassion during our time of need on New Year’s Eve.
