Roberto was born Nov. 22, 1925, to Ruben Gallegos and Paula Gallegos in Ozona, Texas.
Visitation is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday Dec. 30, in Johnsons Funeral Home
chapel, 435 W.Beauregard, San Angelo, Texas.
The Rosary is at 7:00 pm Thursday in the funeral home chapel, following the visitation.
Service is at 10:00 a.m. Friday Dec. 31, at St.Mary's Catholic Church, 9 West Avenue N,
San Angelo, Texas.
The Burial will be held at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, FM Highway 1223, San Angelo,
Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson's Funeral home.
Roberto is survived by his wife Carolina Gallegos, his children Grace Settell, Robert A.
Gallegos, and Ruben Gallegos, all of San Angelo, Jose Varela, of Sacramento, Calif., Vivian
Bailey, of South Park, CO, Jamie Gallegos of Sacramento, Calif., and Danny Gallegos of
Pineville, N.C.
He is also survived by his brother Ramon Gonzales, of Red Oak, Texas, many special
grandchildren, great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and
friends. Roberto is also survived by numerous family members in Hamilton City, and Paradise
Calif.
Roberto was preceded in death by his brothers Jose Felipe Reyes, Valentine Gallegos, and sisters
Fabiana Reyes, Francisca Jaquez, Suse Gallegos, Tersea Soto, and Concha Nerviaz.
Roberto worked as a ranch hand as a young man in various parts of the country including
Texas, Colorado, California, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico,
Oklahoma, Arkansas, North Carolina, North and South Dakota, Illinois and Iowa.
During World War II he enlisted in the Army to serve his country. He was assigned to
the 69th Infantry Division at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. From Camp Shelby, he was
transferred to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey and the Port of Embarkation to the European theater,
with the staging area in Southhampton, England. From England the 69th division landed in
LeHavre, France and into battle. While the division fought its way to Germany, he received
numerous serious wounds from mortar fire, while trying to save his fellow wounded soldiers.
For his bravery he received the Bronze Star, with valor, the Purple Heart, as well as
numerous other medals, and commendations. He recuperated in England for 6 months, and then
was shipped back to the United States.
Upon his discharge from the Army Roberto married his special friend Carolina Gonzales
in 1948 in Sonora, Texas. They had a blissful marriage for 62 years, living in Texas and
California.
While in Texas he worked for Meyer Mortars, in San Angelo. After moving to Sacramento, California,
he worked for the City Maintenance Dept. until his retirement.

The family is thankful for all gestures of kindness, calls and extended friendships. The
family would also like to thank Roberto's neighbors for their kindness,
and the staff of the Meadow Creek Nursing Center for the wonderful care.
His pall bearers are his sons, Ruben Gallegos, Daniel Gallegos, his brother Ramon
Gonzales, his cousin Arturo Hernandez, and special friend Brett Froelich,
his son-in-law Nick Settell, and honorary pall bearer Hecto Gonzales.
