Mavis Leora Hinson ,83, was born January 31, 1935 and passed away August 13, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents Nona Leora and Oscar Raymond Oak, sister Donna Mae Elder, ex-husband Erby C. Hinson Jr., daughter-in-law Rosalyn Hinson, grandchildren Meredith Marie Hinson, Paul Stewart, nephews Douglas, David and Mark Elder, great niece Jennifer Elder. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Rodney and Sue Oak, daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Chris Stewart, son and daughter-in-law Tim and Patricia Hinson, grandchildren Sarah and Jimmy Prine, great grandchildren Samantha, Madysen, and Jonathen Prine, Haley and Emily Cagle, beloved puppies Daisy and Luke, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mavis was born in Crofton Nebraska but grew up in Douglas Wyoming where she graduated from Converse County High School. Mavis married Erby C. Hinson Jr. With Erby having been in the Air Force, the couple lived in Colorado, Germany, and then San Angelo, Texas where they raised their two children. Mavis worked at GTE as telephone operator and worked up to management. Erby and Mavis were married 19 years. After they divorced, Erby and Tim moved to Odessa. The family remained close and Mavis traveled back and forth from San Angelo to Odessa to help take care of Erby after she retired. Mavis took care of her mother in her elder years who lived to be 89. After Mavis retired she took a trip with her church group to Switzerland and the Holy Land in Jerusalem where she was baptized a second time. Mavis remained active in the community doing volunteer work for Community Hospital, San Angelo Police Department, Foster Grandparents of San Angelo, and San Angelo ISD as a crossing guard. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was very firm in her faith. Mavis had a servant’s heart and graciously gave to her family. She loved to spoil her 2 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She always made sure her grandkids and great grandkids had great birthdays, Christmases and plenty of clothes. She was the life support of her family. She was known for her giving nature and huge heart. She was a very independent women who was always taking care of everyone else. She was also well known for her gag gifts and dry sense of humor. At baby showers, she would give lingerie and at wedding showers she might give baby diapers. She survived a broken femur bone, knee replacement, and colon cancer. In her final months she was diagnosed with a tumor. She lived out her final weeks in her home surrounded by family and her daughter by her side. To know Mavis was to be blessed for she was truly one of God’s best.
