Marvie Etta Rader, 77, of San Angelo, TX, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024. She was born on May 5, 1946, in Lexa, AR, to the late L.C. and Blondell Askew. Marvie spent her formative years in West Helena, AR, where she lived with her Aunt Bertha “Bert” Lucas and Uncle O.D. Lucas from the age of 6 to 18. She attended Eliza Miller High School and proudly graduated in the class of 1965. Her pursuit of education led her to earn a BSN from Dillard University in 1969, followed by a master’s degree in Educational Psychology from Wayne State in 1974.
Marvie embarked on a remarkable career as a nurse, starting in the Air Force as an Active Duty Nurse from 1970 to 1974, and later serving in the Air Force Reserves from 1976 to 1989. During her time in the military, she met her beloved husband, Michael, while stationed in Aviano, Italy, and they shared 47 years of marriage until his passing. Their union blessed them with two children, Jonathon and Jennifer.
A compassionate caregiver, Marvie touched countless lives throughout her career. She worked in various nursing roles across the country, finding particular fulfillment as a hospice nurse. Her dedication and kindness left a lasting impact on her patients and colleagues alike, culminating in her retirement in 2018.
Marvie’s faith was central to her life, having been baptized at an early age at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. As a devoted member of PaulAnn Church, she lived by biblical principles, sharing the gospel eagerly and demonstrating Christ-like compassion through her charitable acts and selfless giving. Marvie's heart overflowed with forgiveness, and she was a staunch advocate for Veterans causes, actively participating in the local DAV Chapter 237 named after her late husband.
Beyond her professional and religious commitments, Marvie pursued various hobbies, including playing the piano, exercising, studying Hebrew, and enjoying time on her ranch. Her resilient spirit and unwavering faith in God sustained her through life's challenges, including her illness, which she faced with courage and acceptance.
Marvie’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family and friends.
