We honor the passing of our loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather, Leonard James Johnson on March 11, 2016. He was born on May 25, 1933, in Avoca, Pennsylvania. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. While stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, he met the love of his life, Phyllis Hochevar at a USO Dance. After dating just three months, they began their tour of duty together on November 3, 1956, in Pueblo, Colorado.
Leonard served 21 years in the Air Force, spending time with his growing family in such places as Orlando, Florida, Seville, Spain, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Bangkok, Thailand, and Marquette, Michigan, before retiring with a rank of Master Sergeant, in San Angelo, Texas, in 1972.
Leonard is preceded in death by his mother, Rhea Marie Johnson, and his favorite aunt, Catherine Curry. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years Phyllis; his daughters Diane Johnson and Sharon Flippin and husband Gary, all of San Angelo, Texas; Terri Havenstrite of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Sandi Raun of Flower Mound, Texas. He has five beautiful grandchildren including Cory James Flippin and fiancée Mary Beth Dingus, Catherine Faith Raun, Christopher Douglas Havenstrite, Benjamin Cole Raun and Joy Marie Havenstrite; a sister Karen and husband Ronny Aston of Moscow, Pennsylvania; and his four-legged walking buddy, Cheeko.
Praying of the Rosary is at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. and Fr. Charles Greenwell will officiate. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, American Cancer Society or Meals for the Elderly. The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Prieto who gave him an extra five year of good life, Jerrie Smithwick, and the staff at Shannon Hospital ER and ICU that took good care of him.
Len was an avid golfer and sportsman. His love of sports was shared with his wife as they spent many years cheering on their favorite teams. Always a faithful member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, he was a man with a generous and loving spirit who will be dearly missed by all.
