He was born in San Angelo, Texas on November 14, 1952. Jose graduated from Central High School and received a degree from Angelo State University and was commissioned to the United States Air Force from ASU’s ROTC. He also received master’s degrees from Sul Ross University and Webster University.
Jose was married to Delia Gutierrez Sosa on August 16, 1975. After 30 years of service, Jose retired from the United States Air Force as a Colonel in Fair Oaks Ranch, TX. After active duty retirement, he continued working at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX with Homeland Security and then became the Emergency Manager for Medical Command (MEDCOM). While serving in the Air Force, Colonel Sosa was a part of the Joint Command Staff at CENTCOM during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the War in Afghanistan. While with the Joint Command Staff at CENTCOM he worked directly with the Generals overseeing each of America’s military branches. Jose was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America, The Knights of Columbus, Little League Baseball, and supported the Carmelite Order in San Antonio, TX. Jose loved to fly fish, and could often be found on Texas’ lakes and rivers.
He is survived by his parents, Gonzalo and Tomasa Rios, Sr. and Father and Mother in-law, Jesus and Eva Gutierrez Jr. He is survived by his daughter and son in-law Katherine and Joe Michael Cano, along with his only Grandson Joe Michael Cano Jr. “JC”. Also surviving Jose is his son Jason Sosa PhD, Esq. Jose will be missed by his surviving brothers Salvador Sosa, Gonzalo P. Rios Jr.(Connie), Phillip Rios (Cindy), and sister Elva Duron (Danny) and several nieces and nephews whom he loved.
A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2016 in the chapel of Johnson’s Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial to follow in Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
