SAN ANGELO — Jeff Fleming McKee, 94, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, in a local care center. He was born on Oct. 2, 1919, in Winfield, Texas, to Neva Jo and Gilbert Houston McKee, the youngest of four surviving children. Jeff grew up in Winfield and during his school years excelled in playing basketball and was awarded a basketball scholarship. He married Lurline Williams in 1938, and moved to San Angelo before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed at Pearl Harbor prior to returning stateside to the Naval Base in Jacksonville, Florida. He received an honorable discharge in 1945, and returned to San Angelo. He and Lurline had two daughters, Lana and Debra. Jeff married Gwendolyn Rountree March 8, 1978.
Jeff was the owner of McKee Paint and Body Shop and Garage for over 50 years. He retired in 2008, at the age of 88, because of failing health. He enjoyed watching Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer and sports of all kinds. Jeff watched the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks and the Texas Rangers faithfully. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting dove and quail. Jeff and Gwen were members of Park Heights (The Heights) Baptist Church. Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; sister Evelyn McKee; brothers Dean McKee and Cleddie McKee and an infant brother, Baby Don, and an infant sister; brother-in-law Jerry Wooten; and his beloved English Bulldog, 'Tubby.' He is survived by his wife of 36 years (and caretaker for the last six years), Gwendolyn McKee; daughters Lana Vaughn Vandiver (Bobby) and Debra Martin (Mark), all of San Angelo; stepdaughter Robin Meyer of Santa Fe, New Mexico; mother-in-law Marjorie Logsdon of Clarksville, Tennessee; father-in-law A.E. 'Curley' Wooten of Weatherford; sister-in-law Patricia Rees (Chet) of Tampa, Florida; grandsons John Vaughn (Leslie) of Christoval, Jeff Vaughn (Sharon) of Houston and John Martin (Kim) of San Angelo; granddaughter Lisa Smith (Brad) of Wimberley; and great-grandchildren Brittany Schirtzinger, Lindsey Vaughn, Lainey Vaughn, Kylee Martin, Matthew Martin, Brock Smith and Bridge Smith. Also special friends, Ron and Marlene Houdek of Midland and Bob and Judy Hall of San Angelo. The family received friends and family for visitation Friday, June 6, 2014, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tommy Richardson officiating. Honorary pallbearers for the service will be Mark Martin, Bobby Vandiver, John Vaughn, Jeff Vaughn, John Martin, Ron Houdek, Bob Hall and R.P. O'Harrow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
