James B. “Rusty” Ratliff, III., otherwise known as “Grandad” to everyone, 75, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2017 in Corpus Christi. He was born to the late, J. B. Ratliff, Jr. and Mary Katherine Neal Ratliff on Thursday, March 19, 1942 in San Angelo. He was married to the love of his life, Vicki Lynn Bates Ratliff for 49 years at the time of her passing in 2012. Rusty was a graduate of Fort Stockton High School where he played football and raced cars. Ranching and taking care of his sheep as well as fishing were his passion. He was a member of Castle Gap Bass Busters and was an active participant and supporter of the annual livestock show. Rusty served as a Board of Trustees member with the Rankin ISD and was an avid Rankin Red Devil fan and supporter. He was a member and former leader of the Upton County 4-H Club. He was a kind man with a great sense of humor. Rusty was a man of few words, but one that you stopped to listen to when he spoke. His impact on his community, those he spent time with and organizations he supported will be forever changed for the better. Rusty was preceded in death by his parents; wife, and son, Randall Todd Ratliff.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Karrie Ann and Mark Self, and Kimberly Kay and Billy Teague; grandchildren, Kaycie Rae Teague, Kylee Elizabeth Self, Randall Tate Teague, and Ty Austin Self; sister, Clara Jo Huckaby; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be a time of visitation held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017 in the First United Methodist Church, Rankin. Funeral services will be held at the church at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 with Rev. Leslie Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in the Rankin Cemetery with Billy Teague, Mark Self, Tate Teague, Ty Self, Danny Michum, Dustin Ratliff, Michael Huckaby, and Neal Huckaby serving as pallbearers. Dwayne Lindsey, Tommy Latham, Jim Huckaby, Mike Ratliff, Tom Bloxom, and Tommy Owens will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Rusty’s honor to the Rankin High School Scholarship Fund.
