He was born August 28, 1942 in Abilene, the son of J. D. “Jack” and Johnnie Rae Duncan Newby. He graduated from Central High School in San Angelo and later received his bachelor’s degree from Angelo State. He served in the U. S. Navy on the USS Merrick during the Viet Nam War and leter married Pamela Turley on February 17, 1967 in San Angelo. He was a former employee of GTE and later transferred to Grapevine in 1989 where he retired from Verizon. He had been involved with youth soccer and had volunteered with “the Dirty Dozen”. He had attended Methodist and Presbyterian churches. His hobbies included playing golf and tennis, fishing, running, and doing woodworking projects especially building bird houses. He will be remembered for his jolly personality and always ready with a joke.
He is survived by his wife, Pam Newby of Grapevine, a son, Jay Newby of Grapevine, a daughter, Robin Graff and husband Brian of Ft. Myers, Florida, a grandson, Kenji Graff, two sisters, Becky Abel of Houston and Sara Albert of San Angelo. He also leaves behind his loyal dog, “Baba”.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 pm Saturday, May 26, at Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with burial to follow under the direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home.
