

James E. Murphy was born on April 23rd, 1937 in Worthem, Texas to Johnny & Pauline Murphy passed away peacefully on September 19th, 2021. James (Jim) graduated from Lamar High School. In February of 1958 he married Bernice Hopcus, later welcoming a daughter Kathleen in 1960.
Jim served as a law enforcement officer, DEA agent, and lead investigator throughout his career serving on the Houston Police Department (TX) and Hobbs Police Department (NM). He was a dedicated Police Captain who loved serving and protecting his community. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, his family and friends. He spent many summers visiting his daughter and grandchildren in the Colorado mountains.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, great-grandfather and a great friend to many. Those who knew him well will remember him for his wit, strong work ethic, and love of conversation. He was an avid reader. He will be greatly missed.
James is survived by Bernice Murphy, his wife of 63 years. His daughter Kathleen Whinnery Murphy and her five children, Allison Athey, Christopher Athey (Lana), Jameson Johnston (Missy), William Whinnery, and Landon Whinnery and five great grandchildren Aubrey, Leland, Hagyn, Loa and Eve Athey.
A memorial will be held Saturday, October 16th at Johnson Funeral Home in San Angelo at 1 p.m.
