He was a founder and elder of the first charismatic church in San Angelo, Way of the Cross, later merging and becoming the Tree of Life Church. He also served as an elder at Jesus Christ Church in Ballinger and Victory Christian Center in San Angelo. In 1952, he married Lorine Spieker and they shared 59 years and six months of marriage. They were blessed with two sons. They lived in the Mereta and Wall communities. Herbert was active in the Wall school district as a trustee and president of the PTA. He was always supportive in furthering others' education. Hebert's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his joy and delight and he wanted then to know his Lord Jesus Christ. He loved singing to them playing his harmonica and telling them his "made-up" stories. They loved his imitation of Donald Duck.
