Gwen was born June 7, 1918 to Harper S. and Aggie Brown in Gordonville, Texas. She was the 2nd of 6 children. The family moved to Levelland, Texas when she was 6 years old. She lived there until she was 72.
She married Duff Abell, the love of her young life in December 1933. They had a daughter Beverly and a son Troy. She was a homemaker and was involved in the lives and activities of her children. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught children’s Sunday school.
At age 60 she started driving a school bus. She loved the kids and often pulled the big yellow bus into Dairy Queen where she had purchased ice cream cones for them. Cookies and popcorn balls, homemade by Gwen, were frequently served.
After Duff died in 1982, she started delivering meals where she met E.D. Simpson and they were married in August 1983. The traveled the entire U.S. in their motor home.
Gwen and Ed moved to San Angelo in 1990. She became active in the community volunteering at Meals for the Elderly. She was a faithful member of Southland Baptist Church. She was a member of the quilting group that met weekly. She also helped mail the church bulletin.
Gwen’s life was her family. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, granny and great granny.
She was predeceased in death by her parents, her husband Duff Abell, her husband Ed Simpson, her brothers Earl Brown, Fred Brown and Meadow Brown.
She is survived by her daughter Beverly and husband Robert Nickel of San Angelo; her son Troy Abell and his wife Lisa Baker of Waco; her grandchildren Todd and Sonia Harper and children Haylee, Emilee and Preslee of San Antonio; Chad and Cindy Harper and children Alexandra and Elizabeth of McKinney; Matthew Harper and children Lindsay and Peyton of Dallas; Megan and Jon Ray Gardner and children Solomon and Oliver of Carbondate, CO.; Michael and Haley Abell and children Anna Scout and Jack of Louisville, KY. and Jake Abel of Waco. Other survivors are a brother H.B. Brown of Portland, Ore. and a sister Allie Mary Brown of Alabama and a special nephew Ronnie Brown of Levelland, TX.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 16th at 10:30 AM at Southland Baptist Church, with Pastor Taylor Sandlin officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson’s Funeral Home
