Evelyn was born in Moultrie, Ga., where she grew up and graduated from high school.
She was working as a legal secretary when she met the love of her life in Sunday school. He was John Thompson, a soldier assigned to Army Intelligence in Jacksonville, Fla.
The couple were married on Dec. 26, 1954, in Moultrie. They settled on the Thompson family farm near Swea City in northern Iowa. There their first children, Lynn and Greg, were born.
After John joined the U.S. Border Patrol, the Thompson's moved to Calexico, Calif., where the twins, Kaye and Jack, were born.
In 1964, the family moved to Ozona in southwest Texas, where the children grew up.
A stay-at-home mom while her children were small, Evelyn resumed work as a legal secretary before entering the banking business. She retired as secretary of Ozona National Bank.
After retirement, the Thompsons moved to Buchanan Dam, then to San Angelo where John died in 2006.
Among the greatest joys of Evelyn's life were her grandchildren.
She and John would travel across a sizeable area of Texas to watch their grandchildren play soccer or basketball, run track or cross country, or perform in a dance or piano recital -- a practice Evelyn continued after John's passing.
Her grandchildren include, Wiley Williams of Robstown Evelyn's olldest grandchild, who works in construction and is the father of Evelyn's first great-grandchild, Colt; Zackry Williams of Robstown, who works in his family's cotton ginning business; Bailey Williams of Robstown, a news editor at a Corpus Christi TV station; Sarah Reed Hall, a teacher in an Christian school near Jakarta, Indonesia; Daniel Reed, a sophomore at Baylor University; Jayme Hufstedler a medical student in San Antonio, Carlee Hufstedler, a Baptist seminary student in New York City; Ericka Thompson Willingham of Lubbock, a cosmetologist and mother of Evelyn's first great-granddaughter, Aurora; John Dale Thompson, a senior at West Texas A&M and Grace Thompson, a junior at Texas Tech University.
Evelyn also took great pride and pleasure in playing her harmonica for church and nursing home audiences.
Survivors include her children Lynn Reed and her husband Jerry of Abilene; Greg Thompson and his wife, Rose, of Buchanan Dam; Kaye Hufstedler and her husband, Jay, of Amarillo; and Jack Thompson, minister of Buffalo Springs Community Church and his wife Tonya, of Lubbock; the ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Thompson of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Lovelace Brown of Moultrie, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff at the BSA rehab who became family to us during her stay there. Words can't express the love and gratitude towards Ossie Green and Billie Stacey who selflessly served and cared for Evelyn when she came home!
