

Earlene Day Tyler of San Angelo, passed away on Sunday night, June 5th, 2016, at Shannon Hospital after complications with COPD and pneumonia. She was just weeks away from her 96th birthday. Earlene was born to Earl Day and Sallie Marietta Green Day on June 21, 1920, in Blanket, Texas. Her four brothers and sisters Gene and Perry Day, Estilene Day, and Vivian Day McCaleb each predeceased Earlene who was the baby of the family. Earlene attended Abilene Christian College and graduated in 1941, with an English/Civics Degree. She taught a year and then worked in Washington, D.C. and Fort Worth for the government during WWII. She learned to fly and was planning to enlist and fly as a WASP when a chance meeting renewed her friendship with R.D., a fellow ACC graduate. She married Revis Dexter (R.D.) Tyler, Jr. on December 16, 1943, at her parent’s home in Brownwood, TX. Afterwards they honeymooned in San Antonio, at the Menger Hotel. They were happily married for 68 years until R.D.’s death in March, 2012.
Earlene and R.D. raised two fine sons during their years together. They also contributed to their beloved ACU, the Johnson Street Church of Christ, a travel group called The Cisco Kids, the Exxon Mobile Company retirees group, and many civic organizations in the towns where they lived. She loved to ride horses as a girl, was a cheerleader in school, and enjoyed swimming, fishing, and golf throughout her life. She was president of the San Angelo Country Clubs Women Golf Auxiliary and played into her 70’s. She especially loved to cook for her family and taught both her grandchildren to fish.
Earlene is survived by her two sons: Revis D. Tyler, III, his wife Dr. Norma Smith-Tyler, and their two children, Hamilton Day Tyler and Hanlyn Tyler; and Dr. Earl Day Tyler, his wife Jeanell Tyler, their four children, Tim, Tye, Tori, and Tavin, and 8 great-grandchildren. There are many nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews.
Dearest mother and grandmother, you always put your faith and family first and loved us with all your heart. Thank you, dear mother, Earlene.
