Donald Ray Speer was born in Oil City, Louisiana on September 8, 1931, as the last child of Flavor C. Speer and Viola Mae Speer. Donald Ray grew up in the small east Texas community of McLeod. His passions were playing football, basketball, and chasing this “one little girl”, as he was so fond of saying. At age 16, he received his parents’ permission to marry that “one little girl”, Golden Jewel Hall. On December 10, 1947, Don and Golden embarked upon their life adventure together. Both attended a small business college prior to Don enlisting in the US Air Force. Assigned to Goodfellow AFB in 1951, Don and Golden made their home in San Angelo. In April 1979, having served 28 years in the US Air Force, Don retired at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. In that year, he began a career in residential real estate and would spend the next 35 years as a very active and productive member of the San Angelo real estate community.
Donald Ray Speer was preceded in death by his lifelong love, Golden Jewel Speer, his elder brothers (Roy Merrill Speer, Aubrey Flavor Speer, Wayne Edward Speer, Leonard Speer), by his elder sister (Evelyn Speer Elkins), and his elder half-sister (Allene Speer Hafenbrak). He is survived by daughter (Dana Phillips), son (Steve Speer), grandsons (Daniel & Matthew Speer), granddaughters (Brooke Post & Megan Arroyo), and many devoted nephews and nieces.
Memorial services are scheduled for June 10, 2017, 1pm at Johnson’s Funeral home, San Angelo TX.
