She was born May 17, 1926 to Frank and Matilda Natzel, in Manila, Iowa; the youngest of ten children. She was raised in Montevideo, Minnesota. Her father was master of the railroad and first generation American-German. Bernie graduated from Montevideo High in 1944. Bernie not only raised her own two children, but she was also a foster mother to twenty children over 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Slaughter, Jr.
She is survived by her son Gary W. Elmquist and wife, Linda of San Angelo; daughter, Brenda Duncan and husband, James of San Angelo. Granddaughter, Marla Locke and husband Kenneth of Denver, Colorado; grandson, Andrew Duncan of San Antonio, TX; three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Kaitlyn and Jordan Raines of Denver, Colorado, a number of nieces and nephews and a very special friend Chris Hoffman.
Bernie was a homemaker. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always looked at life positively. She will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 13th at St. Mark Presbyterian Church with Rev. Glenda Harbert officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson’s Funeral Home.
