He travelled to Salt Lake City from Norway to visit his mother who had immigrated to the U.S. following World War II. In Salt Lake he met his future wife, Solveig Hjelm. She, too, was visiting Utah, although from Sweden. The two met and married in 1953. Willard always said it was the longest visit of their lives. They traveled often to Norway and Sweden for many wonderful family visits. Willard worked for Mountain Bell/Century Link for 35 years. He was an avid skier and soccer player. He was inducted into the Utah Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997 for his commitment and contributions to the game of soccer. He played for and managed the Viking Soccer Club for 37 years. Not only did he keep the Norwegian traditions and celebrations alive in his family, but in the community as well. Willard was the best and most stalwart of everything that represented his beloved Norway. His passing leaves a large void in our family and in the Norwegian community as well. He was a very kind, non-judgmental and compassionate man.
He is survived by his 4 children, Linda (Matt), Eva (Jeff), Kirk (Celita), John-Erik (Traci), 16 grandchildren, 41 great- grandchildren, sister, Britt Hanks (Sterling), sister-in-law, Birgit Montilla (Paco). Many nieces and nephews in the U.S., Norway and Sweden.
He is preceded in death by his wife: Solveig Hjelm, parents: Olav and Inga Hansen, sisters and brothers: Gerd, Ruth, Oddvar, Jan, Per.
