Thomas Arthur Witt

Thomas A. Witt was born in St John, Kansas on May 17, 1941 to Chester Thomas Witt and

Beatrix Gorden. Thomas, or Tom as most knew him, was the youngest of 9 children. Tom didn’t

learn to walk until he was 4 years old and had many health concerns throughout his life, but he

endured each trial with faith and perseverance. He learned at a young age how to cook breads

and pies alongside his mother in the kitchen. His dad taught him to confidently build and fix things.

As a young child he had a pet raccoon that he loved and took with him everywhere. He lettered in

track in High School, which was quite an accomplishment considering his many physical

challenges. In his early twenties, he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to work for his brothers

HVAC store. This is where he met the love of his life, Sylvia Thatcher, who was working

as a receptionist for his brother.

Tom married Sylvia on March 28, 1964. Later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a

convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He had a strong and abiding faith in

our Savior Jesus Christ and eternal families. He bore his testimony often and applied those

principles regularly in his daily life. He maintained his faith in the salvation of Christ consistently

to the very end. He enthusiastically fulfilled many church callings in a variety of positions.

Together Tom and Sylvia raised four children in Salt Lake City. Toms greatest successes were

his children and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.

Tom had a long and successful career with the LDS church in the Physical Facilities

Department in many capacities, eventually retiring after 25 years. He made many lifelong

friends there. He set a strong example of hard work and dedication for his family which has

left a lasting legacy with those who knew him. After retiring, and as his health allowed, he

volunteered at This is the Place Heritage Park in the cabinetry shop. He loved sharing his

woodworking talents with others. He enjoyed dressing up as Santa Claus during the holidays

for parties. His big blue eyes and joy were enough to make anyone believe! He also had the

gift of gab! He could talk to anyone about anything and immediately accepted everyone without

judgement. Tom loved listening to Johnny Cash, watching John Wayne, and Old Westerns.

Tom is survived by his children: Thomas A. Witt II (LuAnn), Shawna Witt Pendleton,

Rebecca Startup (George), and Alisa Woicicki (Shawn); 10 grandchildren: Ashley, Tyler, Thomas,

Tanner, Zachary, Rachael, Aaron, Miranda, Emily, and Jacob. One Sister: JoAnn Freeman.

Proceeded in death by his Wife, Brothers: Delbert Witt, Leon Witt, Leo Witt, Fred Witt and

Wayne Witt. Sisters: Maxine Waterhouse and Audrey Hess.

Due to Covid-19, a small, socially distanced viewing will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary from

6:00-8:00pm on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. He will be honorably interred at the Kaysville City Cemetery.
