07/04/1922 ~ 04/30/2010
Sophie Mastoris Saltas, loving mother, yiayia, sister, aunt, and nouna died peacefully surrounded by her family on April 30, 2010. Sophie was born July 4, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John and Koula Kelperis Mastoris. She graduated from West High School in 1939. Sophie married Paul G. Saltas on April 23, 1944, and they shared a wonderful life together for 44 years.
Sophie was a dedicated lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church. She baked “prosforo” (holy bread), taught Sunday School, and was a charter member of the Mothers Club, which later became the Philoptochos Society. She also served on the Greek Language Program Board. Sophie gave of her time and talent at the Greek Festival, helping with accounting, baking, and sharing her famous galopita recipe. She was a very active member of the Daughters of Penelope and Arcadian Ladies.
Sophie could take shorthand like nobody’s business. She also loved to write notes and cards for all occasions and even included personalized sentiments. We will miss the underlines that she carefully added to every note to emphasize her true feelings. She remembered the birthdays, anniversaries, name days, and baptism anniversaries of all her family and friends. Fourth of July festivities matched perfectly with Sophie’s firecracker personality. She was always proud to celebrate her birthday with America’s, as she was red, white, and blue through and through. Sophie befriended everyone she met and enjoyed being surrounded by many. She was always on the go. She was also an avid Jazz and Yankees fan. Her “hands on” lessons preparing traditional Greek food and pastries will live on through her children and grandchildren as part of her legacy.
Sophie is survived by her four daughters: Yvonne (Drew) Pauls, Karen (George) Anastasopoulos, Joanne, Diane (Dennis Taylor); four dearly loved grandchildren: Nicole (David), Aaron, Gregory (Athanasia), Apostoli; sister Mary M. Mannos; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, sisters-in-law, and brother-in-law. She is preceded in death by her husband Paul, parents, brother Chris, and brother-in-law Spud.
The family would like to thank her many caregivers, Kizzy, Chips, Max, Mabel, and special friends at Woodland and Bristol Hospice.
