Paula Secor Paterson, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 19 surrounded by the love of her family. Paula was born on March 1, 1930 in Perrysburg, Ohio, the daughter of Pauline Phelps Secor and James Jay Secor. After graduating from Smith College, she married Alan Stimson Paterson MD. They lived in New York City before moving to Salt Lake City in 1954.
Throughout her life, Paula gave her time and support to others. She volunteered as a Junior League puppeteer, a docent at the Museum of Natural History, and did work for The Cancer Wellness House. As a lifelong Episcopalian, she also gave her time and resources to The Episcopal Dioceses of Utah and St. James Episcopal Church where she was a founding member.
Paula was an adventurer who stepped foot on all seven continents. Her last unfulfilled travel dream was to return to Antarctica to watch the penguin chicks slide on the ice. She and Alan explored the west camping in many remote spots. Because of her interest in history and natural science, she stopped to read every single roadside historical marker!
Paula enjoyed bowling, skiing, most notably at Alta, and played tennis well into her 80’s. She loved to knit, paint, read, watch birds and be anywhere outside in nature, especially If these excursions included her family or friends.
Paula was preceded in death by her husband, Alan S Paterson MD, and by her brother, James Jay Secor II.
Paula is survived by her children Lisa Paterson (Glen Lathrop), Scott Paterson (Peggy), Joel Paterson (Danielle); her eight grandchildren: Adam Smart, Micah Smart, Sarah Paterson McVea, Savannah Paterson, Alex Paterson, Sage Paterson, Joshua Paterson and Sierra Paterson, her five beautiful great grandchildren, and her beloved nieces and nephews.
Paula’s heart and strength touched all who knew her. She will be remembered for her kindness, sense of humor and most importantly for the love and fun she shared with her family and friends. Paula was a role model to many and loved by all. We dearly miss you.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Paula may be made to The Cancer Wellness House or Planned Parenthood.
