Maxine Rasmussen Porter passed away in the early morning hours of March 16, 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on October 26, 1919 in Redmond Utah, the daughter of Alta D. Mickelsen and James O Rasmussen. She lived her early childhood days in Redmond and Salt Lake City. At the age of nine she moved with her family to Bingham Canyon.
She graduated from Bingham High School at the young age of 16. Upon graduation from high school she received a scholarship to Utah State University. While at that university, she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She loved her college days. They were happy and memorable times as she participated in her sorority and served in many campus organizations. Upon graduation she accepted a teaching position in Coalville, Utah where, for two years, she taught at the local elementary school. While at Utah State, she met and dated fellow “Aggie”, Rodney W. Porter. They married on November 19, 1941.
Maxine has quietly and humbly given of herself in dedicated service to her family, her church and community. Throughout her life she was an active member of the LDS Church. She served in many Church callings. Her Church service spanned nineteen years working with the young woman followed by ten years of active involvement in the Relief Society Organization where she served as both Ward and Stake Relief Society President. Later in life, she labored with her husband, Rodney, in the LDS Branch at the Salt Lake Veterans Hospital and enjoyed many years as a hostess at the LDS Church Office Building.
Maxine gave many hours of dedicated volunteer service to civic and community organizations. For seven years she labored for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis as Vice-Chairperson for Davis County. Maxine was also Chairperson of the Mothers March of Dimes at the time of the Polio epidemic. She served in this capacity until the discovery and subsequent public inoculation of the Polio vaccine. She was Chairperson for the American Cancer Society Crusade where she was responsible for the East Bench and South Salt Lake districts. She also served as President of the Federated Women’s Club of Davis County, President of the Lady Lions and President of the Davis County Literary Club.
Even with her many church and civic responsibilities, her family always came first. She was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She adored her grandchildren and always went to special effort to make holidays and every day a special occasion. She is irreplaceable and will be dearly missed.
