Linda Stout, born February 4th, 1940, passed away Monday, July 31st, 2017. Linda joins her beloved parents, Grant and Hazel Thatcher, and her loving spouse, R. Jan Stout, MD. She is survived by her four daughters, Susan (Eric) Lowenstein, Nancy (Todd) Williams, Shari (CJ) Veverka, Kristin (Bob) Thompson, and brother Bill (Carolyn) Thatcher. Linda was known as "Nina" to her 10 grandchildren, a great-grandson and a great-granddaughter, soon to arrive.
Linda was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her mom, Hazel, always considered Linda to be her Valentine's gift. Linda graduated with the Class of 1958 from South High School. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1961 with a degree in Education and was an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Towards the end of her junior year in college, one of Linda's sorority sisters set her up on a blind date with a young medical student, Jan Stout. They spent that first date riding the rollercoaster and dancing at Lagoon! Jan and Linda were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 6, 1961. They resided in the Olympus Cove area in Salt Lake City for over 26 years and were married for over 32 years until Jan's death from brain cancer in September, 1993.
Linda was a loving and devoted mom to her 4 daughters. Favorite family memories include camping trips in the Prowler trailer to Southern Utah national parks and Colter Bay, Wyoming; weekend trips to "The Cabin" in Midway, Utah; Hawaiian vacations; baking cakes, cookies, and Grandma Sedgley's Yorkshire pudding; eating chocolate ice cream and Village Bakery cupcakes; and of course, shopping trips to Nordstrom!
Linda spent most of her years working with children. Being a talented pianist and having a strong love of music, she enjoyed serving as the chorister in the LDS Sunday School and Primary. Her Christmas and Mother's Day children's programs were always eagerly awaited and "not to be missed" by her Holladay 12th Ward family members.
Linda began her teaching career as an "Art Start" coordinator at Oakridge Elementary. As she discovered her love for teaching through Art Start, Linda took classes to obtain her teaching certificate. She taught 1st and 5th grade students at Upland Terrace beginning in 1980. She later transferred to Morningside Elementary School, retiring in 2001 at the age of 61. Her past students remember her fondly as "Stout", the teacher who loved chocolate, the greatest Utes fan ever, and their enthusiastic conductor of musical performances.
Services to celebrate Linda's life will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive on Saturday, August 5th beginning with a visitation from 12:00 noon until 1:30 pm followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Linda's name to the American Heart Association
