Joseph Fielding Bowman, 95, died 25 May 2019 after a 3-day hospice stay. Born 25 November to former mayor John Fife Bowman and Melissa Edna Smith, grandson of Joseph F. Smith, sixth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Married Jane Elizabeth Russell 22 November 1961 in Salt Lake Temple.
Attended University of Missouri, earned BA and MA in English from the University of Utah; minor fields philosophy, journalism, French, and Spanish; doctoral studies in linguistics and rhetoric at Columbia University, NYC, and University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

Survived by wife, Jane Elizabeth Russell Bowman, and four children: Richard Russell Bowman (Sydney), Carol Diane Diamse (Regino), Janet Elaine Peterson (Chad), and Douglas Fielding Bowman (Caroline); 12 grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth (Howell) Cannon. Preceded in death by parents, brother Richard, sisters Dorothy (Allan) Acomb, Katherine (Quentin) Cannon, brother John Hyrum (Ellen).
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Salt Lake 14th Ward chapel at 142 W 200 N, Salt Lake City, UT 84103 at 12:00 p.m. with a viewing from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Friends and family may call 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Chapel at 3401 S Highland Dr. Salt Lake City, UT. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Roses mausoleum.
