Mrs. Dorothy Lee Knight , 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Holladay Health Care Center, Holladay, Utah. She was born on September 30, 1924 in Hicksbough, Texas. She was reared in Batson, TX, and graduated as Valedictorian from High School at age 17. She then worked in Beaumont, TX as a waitress at the Crosby Hotel to help support her parents and siblings. She married Otto P. (Cotton) Knight, a WW2 Army Veteran of the Pacific, at age 25 in 1950. They moved to Daisetta, TX shortly after the birth of their son in 1953, becoming lifetime residents.
She was preceded in death by her parents James R. and Maude L. Downs of Daisetta, TX. Sisters Dolores Nugent of Daisetta, TX; Eloise Roberts of Dayton, TX and Myra Jo Marshall of Sour Lake, TX.
She is survived by her sister Jimmie-Sue and husband George Westbrook of Daisetta, TX. One brother Maurice (Buddy) Downs of Daisetta, TX. One child, son Rev. James P. Knight and his wife Rev. Rebecca J. Knight of Sandy, Utah. Two granddaughters, Mrs. Melody R. Gehring, of Bountiful, Utah and husband Todd, and Mrs. Melissa D. Henn of Sugarhouse, Utah, and her husband Jim; three Great Grandchildren; Katie Olivia Henn, Riley J. Henn, and Bethany A. Gehring. She has left numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends from Texas and Utah! She was indeed a character; she had a great sense of humor, was a selfless giver and she certainly enjoyed her life and family!
Mrs. Dorothy Knight was also a very devout Christian and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Daisetta, TX for over 70 yrs. She then was brought to Utah in 2005 to be near her son and his family. She became a member of her son and daughter-in-law’s church, Great Harvest Family Church of Sandy, Utah. She was a fine Lady and a Texas Belle…she will be missed greatly.
The public is invited to her “Celebration of Home Going Service” which will be held on Saturday, Jan 9, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Wasatch Lawn Mortuary located at 3401 Highland Drive, SLC, UT. No reception will follow. Instead of flowers, a card with a favorite memory of Dorothy given to her son, James, is most appreciated. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
