She is survived by her son Gary Hess (Iwona) of Langen, Germany and her daughter Janice Budge (Lynn) of Sandy, Utah. She is also survived by 2 grandchildren, Brian Budge (Kimarie) of Seattle, Washington and Stephanie Budge (Megan) of Madison, Wisconsin. Her great-grandchildren Amaya and Alexander Budge were a great source of happiness for her. She was preceded in death by her husband Rodney D. Hess in 2005.
Dorothee was born in Katowice, Poland on February 19, 1925 to Max and Elisabeth Steiner. In early 1945 she fled to Bavaria from the advancing Red Army, and later in 1948 met her sweetheart Rodney in Freising, Germany where he was stationed in nearby Erding Air Base with the US Air Force during the Berlin Airlift. She came over to America, and they were married in Salt Lake City on January 7, 1952. They made their home in Logan, Utah where she was a homemaker and helped with running her husband’s business. After the children were raised, she went to work at Baugh Motel in Logan as a front desk clerk.
Mom loved her Family and is remembered fondly for her delicious Cherry Chocolate Cake and German Red Cabbage. Animal welfare organizations were a great passion for her and she supported many of them. Her little dog Coco was one of her reasons for living.
There will be a private family service in mid-September at a time and place to yet be determined. At that time Mom will be memorialized in the Garden of the Lilies in Wasatch Lawns Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
The family would like to thank the Hospice staff of The Lodge by Valeo in Millcreek for their excellent, compassionate care of Mom.
In lieu of flowers please donate to Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah, your local Humane Society , or a charity of your choice. Mom will remain forever alive within our hearts and in our memories of her.
