Don passed away peacefully on February 3, 2015. He was born on March 17, 1924 to Edgar and Delorma Monsen Nielsen in Hyrum, Utah. He was the seventh child of 11 children. He attended Lincoln Grade School, South Cache High School and Utah State University where he became a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in WWII in the Army Air Corp. He married his High School Sweetheart Flora Lundahl in the Logan Temple on October 14, 1947 and they had three children Don Ernest, Nancy Dawn and Carole Louise. He attended Stanford School of Mortgage Banking and Northwestern University School of Mortgage Banking. He was Vice President of Richards-Woodbury Mortgage Corp. Later he became Vice President of Deseret Federal Savings and Loan and then Regional Manager of Deseret Pacific Mortgage and co-founder and owner of Liberty Mortgage Corporation. He was on the Utah Board of Governors of the Utah Mortgage Association, and was appointed as a member of the United States Saving and Loan League Secondary market committee and served as member of the Utah State Housing Development Committee. His daughters Nancy and Carole both worked with him in his business. All of his children have had outstanding business careers. He was an active member of the L.D.S. Church serving as Scout Master, ward clerk, secretary to the Stake Mission President, counselor in the Sunday School Presidency and in the Bishopric. He was an avid golfer being a member of Oakridge Country Club for 28 years and on the board of directors. He had two holes-in-one. He and his wife loved cruising and dancing and going on golf trips. They traveled all over the U.S. on business trips. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed being with them. When his children were young they went on yearly trips to Disney Land and Homestead Resort in Midway.
Flora and Don were married 67 years. He is survived by his wife Flora, brother Paul from Hyrum, sister-in-law Athalee Nielsen and two children; Don Ernest (Texie), Centerville, Utah and Carole, Amsterdam, Holland. He has six grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A greeting of friends will be held on Friday, February 6th at Grandeur Peak LDS Ward, 3640 East Millstream Lane Salt Lake City, UT from 10:00 to 11:30 A.M. before funeral services at 12:00 P.M. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, UT. Thanks to Inspiration Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers please donate to the L.D.S.
