Gus was a retired managing partner of the Deloitte CPA firm’s Salt Lake City office. He was born April 26, 1926 in Salt Lake City to August and Ruth Huhl Glissmeyer. He graduated from East High School and from University of Utah with a degree in accounting.
Gus married Helen Croxford September 23, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were blessed with four children.
To fulfill required military service, Gus enlisted as a Private in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1948. He held the rank of Captain when he was honorably discharged in 1965.
After his graduation from the University of Utah in 1947, Gus was employed by Bekins Van Lines in Salt Lake. In December 1950, he accepted employment with Wells, Baxter & Miller a public accounting firm. After successfully completing the CPA examination in 1954 he received his Utah license (number 353) as a Certified Public Accountant. In 1959 Wells, Baxter & Miller was acquired by Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte), a large international firm. Gus became a partner in 1969 after a six-month assignment in Deloitte’s New York City Executive Office.
He became managing partner of Deloitte’s Salt Lake office in 1973 and held that position until his retirement in 1986. He served in the audit practice, specializing in publicly-held banks and bank-holding companies in Utah, Idaho and Nevada. A favorite memory was attending the annual meetings of the Utah Bankers Association in Sun Valley with his family.
He participated in civic and professional organizations throughout his career, serving as an officer of the Utah Association of CPAs, Salt Lake Rotary Club, the Alta Club, and Better Business Bureau.
He was a member of the Sports Mall and was an avid tennis player, having won numerous trophies in doubles. Gus and Helen participated many years in mixed doubles with a group of friends.
During his retirement Gus served on the boards of directors of Workers Compensation Fund, Advantage Workers Compensation Insurance Company and Continental Bancorporation.
Active in the LDS church, Gus served in numerous capacities, including as a member of the high council of Holladay Stake and as Bishop of Holladay Tenth Ward. He served with his wife for five years as Service Missionary hosts at Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Since 2004 Gus served as a Service Missionary host at The Conference Center.
Gus enjoyed spending time with his family on vacations in Sun Valley and Park City, as well as on holidays and other special occasions. Tennis parties with his family, including his grandchildren, were his favorite times. After retirement he and Helen could often be found enjoying the San Diego area. They also enjoyed other travel, particularly trips to Hawaii, Europe and New Zealand.
Gus was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, who passed away on December 30, 2010. He is survived by their children, Jeff (Sherrie Spratling), South Jordan; Jodi (Vincent) Warner, Lehi; Elana (Joel) Barrow, Midvale; Eric (Martha West) Provo; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, and his brother Mont, Santa Rosa, CA. His parents, two sisters, Gloria and June, and a brother, Darro, also preceded him in death.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday July 1, 2017, at the Holladay 10th Ward, 4601 South 2565 East. Friends and family may visit Friday June 30th, 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, and at the church from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
