Dr. Arthur M. Holloway, 90, of Salt Lake City, UT passed away quickly and peacefully on July 20, 2017. He was born February 23, 1927 in Ogden, UT to Edd and Lillian Tomlinson Holloway. Art served in the U S Navy during WWII as a Naval Hospital Corpsman in San Diego, CA. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Utah, and his Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. In 1950, Art married Ann Cooper. They enjoyed 67 years of married life together, nurturing many deep friendships through their active social life and extensive travel.
Art’s passions and priorities in life were clear: faith, family, good friends, good food and fine wine. We will never know the true number of lives he touched over the course of his 60+ year career as an optometrist. No one was a stranger to Art. His patients, many of whom became dear friends, knew him and loved him for his caring concern, kindness and generosity. He had a heart for service, taking multiple trips to Mexico to provide eyecare to those in need. For over 20 years he and Ann weekly volunteered their time to provide optometric services at the Central City Community Health Center, reluctantly retiring in 2014.
Art was a pillar of Wasatch Presbyterian Church, attending weekly and sitting on the front row. He loved singing in the choir, was a Ruling Elder, Deacon and an early organizer of the Presbyterian Men’s group. He was honored just last year as the National Presbyterian Man of the Year by the Presbyterian Church USA.
He had many talents, one of which was his love of food and wine. He had an exquisite palate and actively participated for over 30 years in Les Amis du Vin-Utah, a local wine group. During that time he and Ann made significant contributions to enhancing Utahans’ awareness and knowledge of excellent cuisine and wine.
If you knew Art, you loved him. He was a very special, one-of-a-kind person, showering everyone with love, humor and warmth. His smile was completely infectious, and his heart had room for everyone he met and knew. He took such joy in life, celebrating everyone and everything, and was the most positive person we’ve ever known. He will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Sherman and Edward. Art is survived by his wife, Ann; three sons, Maxim (Leslie Nelson), Michael (Wendy) and Martin; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Holloway and Sean Neumann; and two great grandchildren, Ava and Audrey Neumann; as well as many adored nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Friends and loved ones are invited to remember and celebrate Art’s life on Thursday, August 10, 3:00 pm, at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1626 South 1700 East, Salt Lake City, UT, 84108.
