William E. Bowers, Jr., died at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on January 30, 2015. Our Country is in mourning, a veteran died today. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late William E. and Amelia Harrison Bowers. He is predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Jeanne in 2011; and his brother, Leroy J. Bowers in 1966. He is survived by their children and spouses, William E. III and Joanne Bowers of North Carolina, Sally and Roger Smith of Salisbury, and Rebecca and James Ashcraft of Delaware; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Signalman Second Class in the Pacific Fleet- Amphibious Group Seven. He participated in the successful Allied Assault of Kerama Retto serving on the USS Mt. McKinley, Group Flagship. He was a member of the Legion of Honor and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in the Boumi Temple of Baltimore. He was a lifetime member and 32nd degree Mason of the Eastern Shore Scottish Rite Club of Salisbury, Orient Maryland; member of Granite Lodge #177 AF and AM, St. Michaels, MD; A&A Scottish Rite, Valley of Salisbury and Baltimore, Orient of Maryland; VFW Post 194 and the American Legion Post 64. The family would like to express gratitude to the doctors and staff at Deer’s Head for the excellent care and compassion shown to him during his illness. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11AM at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Eastern Shore in Hurlock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Deer’s Head Center Volunteers, P.O.
