Robert Clinton Norton lll (Clinton)aged 78 died peacefully early Friday morning December 2 in his Dove Pointe sponsored group home as a result of multiple illnesses. At age 5 Clinton became ill with encephalitis which tragically left him brain damaged. His parents, Bob and Helen Norton brought him to Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore to see Dr. Leo Kanner hoping for a cure. Instead, Dr. Kanner helped Clinton’s family to cope and how to best help Clinton. Dr Kanner’s support and wisdom helped the family to stay healthy and balanced, despite the daunting challenges.
Clinton was kept home with his family as long as they could manage. When finding the institutions for the developmentally disabled inadequate in Baltimore Bob and Helen moved to Salisbury Maryland, where Clinton was placed in the Holly Center.
When Donald Hackett, who is a minister formulated Dove Pointe, Inc. Clinton was eventually placed in one of their group homes where he has resided happily, and comfortably for years up until his passing.
Mr. Hackett focuses his passion on selfless giving. His deep respect for the dignity of all people, especially handicapped individuals is inspirational and beautiful.
Clinton suffered his disabilities for 74 years with grace, courage, and gentleness. He was also very helpful in his group home. He enjoyed going to the activity center, on field trips and visits with his sister, Gloria in Virginia Beach. His housemates Owen Wheatley, David Belote, and Lambert Bratten are very dear.
Gloria and her husband Jim Cargill would like to thank the following who are either affiliated with or members of the Dove Pointe staff. Donald Hackett, Tiffanie Scott, Laurie Pauls, Angel Jones, Sandra Ferkel, Brittany Ward, Jennifer, Rooney, Peggy Core, Lexine Wigfall, Brianna Grattis,Gerald Casimir who treated all he cared for as his own family and the rest of his staff at Clint’s group home: Claudette Walker, Tyre Collins,, Anessa Lofland, and Kisha Korbin, and Rollanda.
