He was always active in sports since a child and played baseball and soccer at CHS and played softball for numerous teams and on the championship Cambridge Clippers basketball team of 1949-50.
On November 23, 1950 he married Janice Jackson at St. Paul’s Church, Cambridge. In December of 1950 he entered the US Air Force and served until November 1954.
He began employment at Cambridge Wire Cloth upon high school graduation until enrolling at Salisbury State College. In June 1967, he started the process of entering the United Methodist ministry and was appointed to the Church Creek Charge while attending college; he graduated with a degree in elementary education. He was appointed to Peniel UMC in Newport, Delaware and spent one year at Eastern Baptist Seminary after which he moved his family to serve in Queenstown-Grasonville-Carmichael Charge. He then transferred to Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1974 and continued serving in Queenstown, Maryland.
He was active in the building of Corsica Hills Nursing Home and Tilghman Terrace Senior Housing and other community activities. He began serving as a Chaplain with the Maryland State Police at this time and continued his Chaplaincy for many years. He also served as Chaplain of the numerous Fire Companies in the communities. In 1977 he moved to Salem UM Church in Selbyville, DE and was also responsible for St. Matthews Church in Fenwick Island, Delaware. He also served with the Delaware State Police while serving in the state. His next appointment was at Centreville UMC and finally at Grace UMC in Cambridge, from which he retired in 1996. Rev. Hurley and his wife Janice moved to Salisbury, Maryland and in February 1997 he began working part time as Minister of Pastoral Care at Christ UMC in Salisbury. In addition, during 1999 and 2000, he assumed the role of interim pastor at Whatcoat UMC in Snow Hill.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Hurley was preceded in death by his wife, six brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by daughter, Cathy J. Moore (Dennis) of Salisbury, son, John S. Hurley of Ridgely; two grandchildren, Earl Moore of Tucson, AZ and Megan Moore of Missoula, Montana; and one great-grandson, Daniel Moore of Hebron. He is also survived by one brother, Leroy K. Hurley (Jackie) of Easton, and brother-in-law, George Reynolds of Salisbury.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021 at 11am at Christ UM Church, 211 Phillip Morris Drive, Salisbury, MD where friends may visit from 10am – 11am.
