Juanita “Nita” Smith, 93, of Salisbury passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Born December 2, 1923 in Byers, OK, she is the daughter of the late Elmer Gunter and Laura Belle Arterberry Gunter. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Perry Smith, and two sisters and one brother. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara S. Hanson and husband John of Salisbury, and one son, Perry J. Smith of Mulberry, FL; 5 grandchildren, Tracy Shannahan (Kelly), Karen Price (Troy), Kristen Krauss (Tim), Kyle Smith (Amy), and Kelly Smith; 8 great-grandchildren, Larry, Alec, Kayla, Ryan, Kali, Sam, Callie, and Noah, who were the joy of her life; numerous other family and friends. Nita was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Salisbury for twenty years. In 1960, Nita was a member of the first graduating class of Delmarva Beauty Academy in Salisbury. Nita owned and operated her own shop (Nita’s Beauty Shop) for over fifty years where she considered her customers some of her dearest friends. To celebrate Nita’s life, a graveside service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury. Pastor Tom McKelvey will officiate.
