Born in Lone Rock, Iowa, Dot was the daughter of the late Harry William Hobson and Mary Dorothy Dittmer Hobson. Raised on a small family farm, Dot completed secretarial school in Chicago and relocated to San Diego to work with Consolidated Vultee Aircraft in support of the war effort. She later moved to Maryland where she met her true love and future husband, Ernest. They married in 1960 at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. She worked with Ernest at Matthews Poultry before starting a banking career, and served as a branch manager and loan officer for what is now M&T Bank until her retirement in 1990. Dot and Ernest also maintained an historic Newtown home and a family farm that ensured a full freezer and canning shelves and food for large family gatherings at holidays. Family favorites like Dot's sweet potato biscuits and corn pudding were cooked in a kitchen full of wonderful aromas, love, and laughter with plenty of family helpers. Dot enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, gardening and birdwatching while sitting on her back porch, especially when sharing that time with her children and grandchildren. She is loved and missed.
She is survived by four children, Daniel H. Matthews and his wife Carolyn, Theodore P. Matthews and his wife Dina, Dorothy K. Ballard and her husband Wayne, and Robert L. Matthews and his wife Jennifer; step children, Ernest C. Matthews and his wife Elizabeth, Pat Schrawder, and Mary E. Donoway and her husband Thurman; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; brother, Wallace Hobson and his wife Jean; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Ernest Matthews in 1989; brother, William Hobson; and sister, Cleo Roberts.
