Susan was born on August 14th, 1944 to Victor and Mary Adelman Hassing. After the death of Victor in World War II, Mary Hassing married Al Haener and settled on a farm outside of Independence, Oregon. She attended various schools starting with St Joseph's Catholic school. In 1950 while in the first grade she met her husband Bob Steiner. She then went to Independence public schools until 1957 and returned to St Joseph’s school for the eighth grade. Susan attended and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1962.
She entered the convent at Marylhurst, Oregon in 1962 and received her vows as a Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, receiving a Masters Degree in Education. After leaving the community, she received a Masters Degree as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from Portland State University and was the manager of the Hooper Detox in Portland. She married her long time friend Bob Steiner in 1994. The couple resided in Portland and then Oak Grove, Oregon where they both retired in February of 2007. Susan was later diagnosed with dementia in 2010. Bob and Susan then moved to Salem, Oregon in 2014 to be closer to family.
Susan was admitted to Rosewood Court Memory Center in 2018 where she passed on June 8th, 2023. She will be interned at Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley, Oregon on a later date. She is survived by her husband Bob Steiner, 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
Her service will be on Wednesday June 28th, 2023 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Salem, Oregon, starting with a Rosary at 10:30am followed by a Holy Mass at 11am. In lieu of flowers you may donate to Tierra Rose or Serenity Hospice in Salem, Oregon.
