At 16, Manny had joined the US MSTS (military sea transportation service) and sailed with them for 4 years before joining the Navy in 1950. He sailed on the USS Porterfield DD682, a destroyer, during the Korean war. He received a medal and commendation for leading a team to rescue a group of stranded Marines. After leaving the Navy in 1954, he worked for the US
Postal Service and eventually retired after 44 years of combined federal service.
After retiring Manny enjoyed many more years of dancing with his wife Debby and bowling. He loved to spend time with his family.
After the tragic Paradise Camp fire in 2018, they moved to Salem, Oregon to be near his daughter Susan, son in-law Brad and family.
During the last few months of his life, hospice honored him with a military celebration of life. With family and friends by his side he was honored with a framed certificate of service, a pin and a beautiful handmade patriotic quilt. Family shared memories and he expressed tearful thanks.
He will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, CA with a Catholic burial and military honors.
Manny is survived by his wife Debby Cummings, daughter Susan (Brad) Roemeling, son John Hunter, sister Josie Sotomayer, granddaughters Shanah (Daniel) Grossman and Hannah (Chad) Wilson, great-granddaughters LaChelle and Hannah Grossman, great-grandsons Brandon and Logan Wilson.
Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
"Yet to all who receive him, to
those who believe in his name, he gave
the right to become children of God.”
