A longtime resident of the Salem/Keizer area, Fern was born in Denver Colorado on April 18th 1934. As a young child, her family moved to Suquamish Washington where she grew up and graduated from Kitsap High School.
Fern married, and after short stays in Hawaii and southern California, settled in Salem, where she raised 3 beautiful daughters.
Fern was a devoted mother and grandmother and active member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salem. She enjoyed spending time at church, but also time visiting family. Fern loved animals of all kinds; domestic and wild. No animal left her back porch hungry, even her adopted raccoon family and the occasional skunk found a welcoming home and bite to eat.
She was a spitfire, jokester and loved a good laugh. Fern was known for flirting with the male nurses, all the way to the very end. She will be deeply missed by her family, and all who knew her.
Grandson Jeffrey’s cherished memory of Grandma’s visits was playing putt putt golf until his mother had to drag them all home, then it was pizza and slumber-party time!
Fern is survived by her 3 daughters; Kelly (Weir) Parent and husband Tom of Seabrook, TX; Wendy (Weir) Thompson and husband Tom of Grand Junction, CO; and Rachel (Weir) Zeeb and husband Jeff of Salem, OR; 7 adult grandchildren; Jeffrey & Johnny Parent; Megan (Thompson) Gardner; Jordan, Hunter, Taryn and Dane Zeeb; and great grandchildren;
A Memorial Mass for Fern will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at 2:00pm.
