Eloise Helen Riffle, 88, died Thursday, May 28th in Salem. She was born July 13, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio to George and Leona (nee Niskey) Thoemmes. The Thoemmes family moved to California in 1943 for the warm climate. Eloise attended a girl’s college in Hollywood, California and by the end of her first year met her future husband, John Riffle, who was stationed in San Diego with the Navy. They were introduced at church where Eloise sang in the choir with John’s mother and sister.
John and Eloise were married May 25, 1945 in South Pasadena, California and together had five children. In 1961 the Riffle family moved to Salem, Oregon. John and Eloise loved living and raising their children in a more rural environment. For three years they provided a shelter home for around 300 children who needed a temporary place to stay. This was quite an adventure for the entire family and one of Eloise’s proudest memories. Following the death of her husband in 1984 Eloise worked at the Oregon Lottery. She enjoyed spending time with her family, painting and working in her yard. Eloise had a great sense of humor and was an inspiration to all who knew her.
In 2013 high school boyfriend, Arliegh Snyder, came back into Eloise’s life. It had been 72 years since they had been together. Arleigh moved to Oregon to be with Eloise and remained at her side to the close of her life.
Eloise is survived by children: Kathy (Bud) Elgin of Salem, OR, Bill (Patti) Riffle of Salem, OR, John (Joyce) Riffle of Austin, TX, Bob (Virginia) Riffle of Monmouth, OR and Richard (Diane) Riffle of Scappoose, OR; nine grandchildren: Shelly (Joshua) Culbertson, Aaron (Holly) Marling, Brian (Kelly) Riffle, Scott (Somer) Riffle, Kevin (Jennifer) Riffle, Jessica Riffle, Nicholas Riffle, Christopher Riffle, and Ryan (Sarah) Riffle; thirteen great grandchildren; three brothers: William (Barbara) Thoemmes, Vincent (Marie) Thoemmes, and George (Cathy) Thoemmes; sister-in-law Betty Rivet and many nieces and nephews.
